Project Overview: International Cyanide Management Code

Trans Continent Ltd and J Resources Ltd

Lomandra Environmental was engaged to support Trans Continent Ltd and J Resources Ltd in becoming the first companies in Indonesia to achieve certification under the International Cyanide Management Code (ICMC). The ICMC is a voluntary Code of Practice aimed at ensuring that cyanide producers, transporters, and gold mining companies follow best practice methodologies to safeguard workers, communities, and the environment.

Our consultancy services were crucial in helping both Trans Continent Ltd, a cyanide transporter, and J Resources Ltd, a gold mining company, meet the stringent standards set forth by the ICMC. This certification signifies their commitment to responsible cyanide management and aligns with global sustainability standards in the mining industry.

Key Services Provided

As environmental consultants, Lomandra Environmental delivered a comprehensive suite of services to ensure both companies adhered to the ICMC’s rigorous requirements:

1. Stakeholder Engagement & Governance Systems

We worked closely with both Trans Continent Ltd and J Resources Ltd to establish robust governance systems across their operations. This involved:

  • Engaging key stakeholders across the supply chain, from cyanide production in South Korea to the Toka Tindung Gold Mine in North Sulawesi and Seruyung Gold Mine in North Kalimantan.

  • Establishing clear and effective communication channels to ensure compliance with ICMC regulations and environmental standards.

2. Risk Assessment & Incident Management Systems

We assisted in developing comprehensive risk assessments and incident management systems for both cyanide transporters and gold mining operations. Our experts provided:

  • In-depth evaluations of potential risks associated with cyanide transport and gold extraction processes.

  • Incident management protocols, including emergency response procedures, to address potential cyanide spills or accidents.

3. Training & Mock Drills

To ensure ongoing compliance and operational safety, we facilitated training programs for employees and management, as well as organized mock drills and first aid exercises to prepare staff for emergency situations. This was an integral part of developing an effective emergency response framework and ensuring staff were well-prepared for handling hazardous materials.

4. Environmental Monitoring & Processing Efficiency

Lomandra Environmental supported the development of environmental monitoring systems to ensure that both companies adhered to ICMC environmental guidelines. Key services included:

  • Continuous monitoring of water quality, air pollution, and cyanide levels to minimize environmental impact.

  • Enhancing processing efficiency at gold mining sites, ensuring that cyanide use was optimized for safety and environmental protection.

5. Maintenance Planning for Critical Equipment

We provided guidance on maintenance planning for critical equipment used in the cyanide transport and gold extraction processes. This ensured operational continuity and risk mitigation for key equipment, such as cyanide storage containers and processing plant machinery.

Partnership with Trans Continent Ltd and J Resources Ltd

Our work with Trans Continent Ltd involved helping them become the first Indonesian cyanide transporter to achieve ICMC certification. This milestone was achieved through an extensive review of their supply chain from South Korea to Toka Tindung Gold Mine.

In parallel, we assisted J Resources Ltd in becoming the first Indonesian gold mining company to achieve ICMC certification for their operations at Seruyung Gold Mine and Bakan Gold Mine, both located in North Sulawesi and North Kalimantan.

Outcomes & Impact

  • Achieved ICMC Certification: Both companies became leaders in responsible cyanide management, with Trans Continent Ltd and J Resources Ltd now holding ICMC certification for their respective operations.

  • Improved Safety & Environmental Standards: Through the implementation of risk management systems, emergency protocols, and environmental monitoring, the companies significantly improved their safety records and environmental performance.

  • Enhanced Industry Reputation: Both companies now have a competitive edge in the gold mining and cyanide transport industries by demonstrating their commitment to global best practices in cyanide management and sustainability.
